What is GIFT Nifty and how does it predict market opening?

I hear traders mention GIFT Nifty before Indian markets open. How do I use this to predict the opening?

GIFT Nifty trades in the GIFT City (Gujarat) SEZ from 6am to midnight. It tracks Nifty futures and gives an indication of where Indian markets will open.

Check GIFT Nifty at 9:00am IST. If it is +100 points vs previous Nifty close, expect roughly +100 point gap up at open. But the gap often partially fills in the first 30 minutes.
