Why the London Session Is the Most Volatile Time to Trade Forex

The London session runs from 8:00–17:00 GMT and accounts for roughly 35% of all daily forex volume — more than any other single session. Here's why it dominates: **1. European banking flows.** Major banks in London, Frankfurt, and Zurich handle enormous corporate FX flows at the open — this creates the initial directional impulse. **2. Overlap with Asia.** The first hour overlaps with the Tokyo close, creating a double-session volume spike and frequent stop hunts. **3. News timing.** Most European economic data (ECB, BoE, inflation readings) releases between 7:00–10:00 GMT, directly into the London open. **4. NY overlap.** The 13:00–17:00 GMT window where London and New York both trade is the single highest-volume period of the week. If you're choosing one session to focus on as a beginner, London is the gold standard — the patterns are cleaner and more institutional than Asia or NY alone. What time zone are you trading from, and how do you handle the London open?
