Why New York Session Drives Most Forex Directional Moves

Here's a stat that surprises most new traders: while London generates the most volume, New York is where most of the directional moves are decided. Why? **1. US economic data.** NFP, CPI, FOMC, ISM — all release during US hours. These are the most market-moving events globally. **2. US equity correlation.** The S&P 500 and Nasdaq move USD pairs significantly. When US stocks rally, risk-on currencies (AUD, NZD, CAD) tend to follow. **3. Position closing pressure.** Most London-positioned traders close before NY close (5 PM EST), creating counter-moves late in the NY session. **4. Options expiry and fixing.** The WM/Reuters 4 PM London fix and NY 3 PM CME options expiry create predictable flow windows within the NY session. Understanding when during the NY session moves are most reliable is key. Early NY (9:30–11:00 EST) is chaotic; 11:00 AM–2:00 PM tends to be the cleanest. What part of the NY session do you find most tradeable?
