How do I choose between direct stocks vs mutual funds?

My parents say to just invest in mutual funds. But I want to pick individual stocks. Which approach is better?

Hybrid approach works best: core portfolio in index funds (70-80%), satellite in individual stocks (20-30%) you deeply research. This gives market returns with potential alpha from stock selection.

For most people, mutual funds (especially index funds) beat stock picking after fees. Statistically, 80% of active fund managers underperform the index over 10 years.
