Holding Through the Weekend: Worth the Risk or Not?
✦
Weekend gaps are one of the most polarizing topics in swing trading. Some traders refuse to hold any position through the weekend. Others consider it part of the game.
**The case against holding weekends:**
- Geopolitical events, economic data surprises, and black swans happen over weekends
- Sunday open gaps can be 50–200 pips on some pairs
- You can't react — markets are closed
**The case for holding weekends:**
- Most weekends are uneventful
- Closing Friday and re-entering Monday means missing potential continuation
- Weekend gap direction is often the week's dominant direction
**My approach:** If I'm in profit and my stop is moved to breakeven or better, I'll hold through the weekend. If I'm still at full risk with the original stop, I close Friday afternoon.
What's your weekend holding policy? Has a weekend gap ever significantly helped or hurt one of your swing trades?
