CPI Explained: How Inflation Data Moves Forex, Gold, and Stocks
✦
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the average change in prices paid by consumers for a basket of goods and services. It's the most widely watched inflation gauge globally.
**CPI components (approximate US weighting):**
• Shelter/Housing: 34%
• Food: 14%
• Energy: 8%
• Medical care: 6%
• Transportation: 7%
• Other services: 31%
**How CPI moves markets:**
**Hot CPI (inflation above target):**
- Fed can't cut rates → USD strengthens
- Higher rates raise discount rate → equity valuations pressured
- Gold: short-term pressure from USD strength, but long-term support from inflation
**Cool CPI (inflation falling toward target):**
- Fed can consider cuts → USD weakens
- Lower rates boost equity valuations
- Gold rallies on lower real yields and weaker USD
**The shelter problem:**
Shelter accounts for 34% of CPI and has remained elevated due to housing market dynamics. Even as other components moderate, shelter keeps headline CPI above target.
Do you track CPI components separately, or just focus on the headline and core numbers?
