Avoiding the NY Session Whipsaw Trap: Rules for Volatile Opens

The first 30 minutes after the NY open (9:30–10:00 EST) is a minefield. Here's how to navigate it without getting chopped: **Rule 1: Define your "no-trade zone."** For the first 15 minutes of the NY open, stay out unless you have a pre-defined setup with a tight entry trigger. Most moves in this window reverse. **Rule 2: News = half size or no trade.** If there's a major data release within 30 minutes of your planned trade, cut position size by 50%. **Rule 3: Set your max daily drawdown before you start.** If you're down 1.5% by noon EST, close everything and stop for the day. **Rule 4: Watch the VIX.** VIX above 20 means risk is elevated — tighten stops and reduce size. The whipsaw frequency increases sharply with rising volatility. What's your biggest NY session risk rule?
